Modelville Hobby race weekend

Modelville Hobby will be having a race weekend in June to help in the fight against Cancer. Final classes are still being determined but retro Can AM and GT Coupe are definitely on the agenda. Other classes will include FCR, H.O., and group 10. Dates are on paper and should be carved in stone very shortly. Ocar 1/32 Sunbeam Tiger LM 1964

Greatings, Here is an Ocar 1964 Sunbeam Tiger. Pretty much all you get is a body, windscreen, head lights and an interior. I will not be using the interior as it did not fit properly. Used a PCS chassis with some 13 inch wheels and a bunch of spare parts from the parts bin.

This body was very thick, so the dremel got a good work out. Added mirrors, gas cap, windshield wiper and rear tail lights. Still need to add the front and rear bumper bar. The front needs to be painted flat black and the interior completed. Hope to finish it up this weekend.

Guys if you ever do any metal fabrication- sheet metal for chassis, heavy wire for household doodads, shearing sheet metal, etc, you have got to look into this. I just took delivery, and I am amazed. This vendor ships this excellent machine for FREE on 2 day shipping (104 pounds!!!), and the quality so far of the machine itself is fantastic. More as I learn this booger. Man, am I going to make some fantastic brass chassis! The same machine is sold for $300 - $800 elsewhere on the web, as usual, with $60 - $80 shipping.

Different versions of the Strombecker Devastator or mistake?

Those who've been following my race reports on the vintage 1/24 racing at Melbourne Model raceway would have picked up that we run quite a selection of classes using original vintage cars or cars made from vintage parts. One of the "new" calsses introduced about 4 years ago is the Pan Americana class. The rules are:

• Any hardbody ‘48 to ’54 American Sedan.
• Any chassis
• Motor must be an unmodified Strombecker Devastator Motor

When we started this class the Strombecker Devastator motor was available NOS in great quanties for about $6 ea. We've had a few new people start racing who need motors and our original source has dried up. We're investigating sources for good used or NOS motors and I remembered I had a NOS one that I thought would at least get one person to the starting post, but guess what I found? Check out the first picture (from a recent "tell him he's dreamin' " ebay auction) of the devastator motor (part 8474) that we all know and love:

Now look at mine (also marked as part number 8474):

Mine looks like a Destroyer. The bubble matches the motor and there are no missing colour chips or anything else to suggest that it's been glued to the wrong card after leaving the factory. In the interests of fair play I'm going to ban my jumbo Devastator from our Pan Americana race for the time being, despite the card showing it's identity.

Is this just a factory mixup during packing, or did Strombecker mean to do mix and matches like this? I got this with a bunch of similar motors. If I remember correctly there were several Destroyer and Devastator motors that all looked identical except for the packaging. I kept one of each and sold the rest, so my example isn't a one-of, but may have been part of a one-of faulty batch.

I've been planing on taking the semi sharp R2 turn start of the chicane out and replace them with R4s to stop the violent crashes there. Well, wait till you see the pics of my track!!! After a year of it sitting idle I get motivated and buy a lot of new cars and clean it all up and the berings go in the motor for my gas furnace exhaust. Where is it? Right over the middle of my layout!!

Completing a collection

Thanks to olskoolslotz (Dave Dobner) my racing fleet of Carrera Classic NASCAR is completed.

You will notice the different shades of red. The lighter, almost pink version was the first on the scene. They knew it wasn't right and the next runs were a more accurate, darker red. These are also the ones that ended up in sets.

I knew he was sending me one...but not both!!

I try not to think of myself as a pure collector. I race these cars and I do not collect them all, nor are they simply to sell later. These cars bring back great memories for me and now it is time to tune one up and get it on the track where it belongs.

I found out it's a Kirkwood made in Japan for them. It takes a F16 motor eraly type from 1963-4 ish if anyone has one for sale let me know lplz.

For independently rotating front wheels, is it allowable to use wheel retainers held in place with set screws? And if so, does the wheel retainer need to be brass or steel. Could it be made from aluminum?

Well, I guess the bug had bit in the previous entry, and so I announce that this track, in its entirety, is coming down. I am keeping structures and such, but I will now follow up on a completely new plan, one I have been thinking about for the past six years or so. The fold-down version is going (piece by piece) into the dumpster.

Needless to say I blame this forum for agitating and regenerating my creative impulses, a fact for which I (and no doubt my slot car provider) am grateful. Cheers!!!

Newbie Problem Solving Help

Hello,
Ok I bought a small Lifelike track a few weeks back. Then found this forum and learned a lot. So I wanted to expand and added afx tracks to it. Have the adapter tracks. Track is on a 4x8 table and still have LifeLike and AFX tracks. Bought a super G car. Worked well. Now it starts and stops and sometimes it doesn't run. cleaned shoes, cleaned rails, took last piece of track before power to see if any problem connections. LifeLike car no problems only super G. Also, if the super G car stops, I can press the trigger on the LifeLike car in the other lane and the super G will start up right away no problems.

I also have built a small oval track, less than 3 feet of track, life like runs no problem, super G doesn't. I thought I had a power issue or dropping with the bigger track.
Question is, I am using just one LifeLife standard Power track, wall wart is rated 17v and 7amps.
This is a 2 lane track. I want to build a 4 lane, but don't want to put money in if I can't figure out or learn how to problem solve what is going wrong with the car. The car is only 4 weeks old.
I was trying out a few bits to see what I liked.
So I don't know if I have a power issue, mixing cars and tracks are a no no, sort of confused as how to proceed. I have looked at buying a variable power supply but not sure if I need one that
will do 10amps or 5amps.
Thanks in advance for any thought or ideas on how to proceed.

DSlot43 Ferrari F-40

OK, calm down it's a DaNaNo body converted to a DSlot43 using a Porsche 917 chassis(SS). The "L" chassis was too long. and the "SS" was a bit too short but by the time I got through taking pieces off the 917, and doing the buildup on the F-40 that was needed, this is the final product with the exception of bigger Lambo wheels and tires which will be going on. I have more pics to do build pages for my website but I'm not feeling like doing that now.

I'm hosting the 3rd set of two races at King Mini Boola Raceway on Saturday, February 18, 2012. We will be racing Slot.it Group C Le Mans and Fly 1964-'74 Le Mans. The only non-stock changes are mandatory Ortmann tires for both classes, and weight can be added to the Fly cars. No magnets allowed. That's about it. Surpris par un mur de glace tandis qu'il s'efforçait d'effacer une pénalité écopée en tout début de journée, l'Alsacien accuse plus de deux minutes de retard sur Jari-Matti Latvala après 10 spéciales. Mikko Hirvonen et Petter Solberg en revanche n'ont pas dit leur dernier mot.

Et dire qu'il se plaignait avant coup du manque de murs de glace sur le tracé de ce rallye de Suède, le rendez-vous le plus atypique de la saison, conditions extrêmes obligent... Ce vendredi, jour de première étape, Sébastien Loeb a perdu toutes ses chances de réaliser la passe de deux après sa victoire sur le Monte-Carlo, victime justement d'une congère dans la septième spéciale. "Je me suis fait surprendre en arrivant un peu trop en travers dans un virage à gauche qui conditionnait une épingle à droite. Je n'ai pas réussi à faire tourner la voiture et elle a été se planter dans le mur de neige, expliquait-il au terme de son calvaire. Les spectateurs sont venus nous pousser, mais nous avons perdu près de deux minutes. La bagarre pour une place sur le podium est terminée, il nous faut maintenant rouler pour rallier l'arrivée et marquer un maximum de points."

Alors que Ferrari était en retrait depuis le début des essais à Jerez cette semaine, Fernando Alonso a mis les choses au clair ce vendredi en bouclant la dernière journée en tête avec un chrono d'1'18"877, 1"6 de mieux que jeudi. L'Espagnol devance de sept dixièmes Jean-Eric Vergne au volant de sa Toro Rosso. Suivent Vettel, Hamilton et Grosjean.

Pat Fry avait semé le doute jeudi avec des déclarations pessimistes sur la F2012. Fernando Alonso n'a même pas laissé le temps aux observateurs de cerner s'il s'agissait de l'intox typique de l'avant saison ou d'une réelle inquiétude sur une monoplace déjà décriée pour sa silhouette si peu gracieuse... L'autre Français en piste ce vendredi, Romain Grosjean, a réalisé le cinquième chrono, bouclant un gros programme puisque la Lotus a parcouru pas moins de 95 tours. Le marathonien du jour se nomme pourtant Bruno Senna, auteur de 125 tours au volant de la Williams, et classé au huitième rang. A noter enfin que Mercedes n'a pas fait tourner sa voiture 2011 ce vendredi, se concentrant sans doute sur le lancement de son programme 2012 prévu pour Barcelone. Not sure if any of you have this answer but after looking at all the releases of cars carrera is soon to come out with I seen the set with the 1/32 ac cobra and cheetah in it.

Will these cars be set only where as you need to buy the whole set just for the cars?

Or will these cars ( AC Cobra, Cheetah) be sold seperately also?

I just want the 2 cars not the track.

Looking for 18kish FK130's

I am convinced that to go to the next level with my Monogrem McLaren M6's that an FC130 is the ticket. The body is right down on the top of the top mounted motor leads with the C can motors. I think I can get a little body float with lower profile FC130 motor. So what I want to locate is an affordable (sub $10) FC130. Anybody have any suggestions?

Corvette GTP - master model in clay 1/32 scale

(Edit) Forgot to mention this is being designed for the slot.it hrs2 chassis.

I would like to start out by saying thanks to Rixvette (Rick) for making the corvette GTP just over a year ago. I have purchased and am finishing up the one I bought from him, but it also inspired me to learn how to create a master and cast my own.

I am no expert in sculpting or casting. I am completely new to this and am learning along the way. What I have, is raw talent in lots of things, creativity and patience. I thought I might share my journey in making a master model out of clay.

Why the corvette GTP since it's been done? Easy, it's my favorite race car of all time and despite it already being done, I wanted to create a version or two also. Thankfully Rick said it was fine that I posted about this project.

Why Clay? It was cheap and readily available locally, along with it being a very forgiving material. If this turns out good, then I will do the V-8 short tail version in rigid foam.

I am using a clay called Plastalina. Plastalina is a non hardening clay. Automotive industry uses this same clay, except a slightly different version which is not available to the general public. Part of the difference is that it's harder and doesn't get as soft at room temperature. I use a basic set of clay sculpting tools atm, but I can see needing a few specialized tools in the future which I will have to fabricate myself.

Sculpting the master:

I have a bed of clay on a piece of foam board. This allows me to handle the model without getting marks all over it. So far this has been a good idea. On the bed of clay, I have outlined the length and width of the car. I didn't start out with those lines, it occurred to me later to put them in. I also have the center line and where the tires are going to be. I started out with a piece of clay for the front and slowly tooled it to a basic shape. As you can see in the photos, I gradually added clay to the point where there is almost a whole car. Getting both sides to mirror is/has been the hardest part so far. I use a set of calipers to take measurements to try and keep things even. This area is where I can see foam being an advantage as it won't get impressions made by the calipers. Also with foam, it would seem that I could draw a profile and then cut it out instead of free handing and eye balling everything. This first attempt probably won't be perfect to scale, but it should be close enough. Part of the reason, is that I do not have any dimensions for the real car. All I have are photos from the net and the book by Alex Gabbard. Right now, nothing is set as the final shape. Some areas are close, like the front, but the cockpit needs a lot of work still. Right now it is just there to represent that area, which helps with shaping the body. Also noticed how the front end shortened up over the coarse of the pictures. I started with it to long, shortened it once, then again to it's more proper length.

The car I am sculpting should be a pretty good representation of the car raced in 1986, the V-6 powered long tail.

I will add onto this post as the model progresses. Right now I have about 10hrs of work into it.

My two worst performing cars came with the West Hampton set....the Chevy Concept and Dodge. They performed worse with magnets than my COT's and 57 and 60's wihout magnets. I started looking at them and realized the tires were glazed over....so I put them on an emry board for a bit and then took the magnets out.....both improved by over 5 seconds....and are now two of the fastest ones.

However, the dodge still has a tendency to jump track and deslot if pushed hard and occassionally doesn't close the lane changers.

Amazing the difference that something so minor made....

Up till now I had been using them with the magnets as ghost cars to throw a little trafic on the trrack......now they probably actually get some running time.

Bottom accessable Magnet in Carrera Cars

We mainly race magnetless (no magnet) here, but the kids run with 1 or 2 magnets. I've found I like the cars that I can easily remove or add magnets from the bottom without taking them apart and removing the chip.

I'm looking for others that have this same access, can you point out some that do?

In particular do any of the
Ferrari 458's (especially the race liveries)
Audi R8
Audi A4
Chevy Corvet C6R
Ford Capri RS 3100
Mercedes Benz SLR
Opel GT Steinmetz

Has anyone tried drilling pinion gears with success? Recommendations?

I'm heavy into 36D motors and require .091" gears. Some are available out there but I have at least two dozen 10, 12, and 14 tooth .078" pinions of no use to me.

The closest quality bit I can find close to .091" is a metric bit (2.35) but I realize the difficulty in holding the pinion in place while being drilled in addition to the possible "wobble" effect from even a quality drill press at such a small diameter hole.

Your knowledge and experience is appreciated.

(I know this is not the swap forum but if anyone needs my vintage 10, 12, or 14 tooth .078" pinions let me know.)

I know someone at Carrera follows this section. We(members) post tips and tricks on how to, in our eyes, improve the cars. Does anyone at Carrera test any of these and say, hmm, good point. We can change that easily? Or do they say, it's good enough the way it is. that's ok. I'm just curious.

I know people do this to all brands but since we know you personally, i figured you could provide some insight.

Hello my fellow slotphiles. You may have not noticed me recently and this is because I have been involved in private enterprise. Last year I took a long break from work and 'retired' to my brothers holiday house in France for R&R plus some DIY to pay for the trip. I took some balsa to whittle because I wanted to try my hand at the body carving game epecially as some of my favourite cars from the lates 60s have never been covered in 1/32. There was no pressure, it was just to while away some time, drink some local Bordeaux and whittle. I took a plan which was based on photo reduced pictures as no plans are available for the RA300. Thus:

I did the usual trick with sticking the plans on the balsa and then carving based on that and surprisingly got this.

When I got back to blighty I did a bit more work with sanding sealer and stuff and did a mock-up with some Fly wheels just to get a feel for whether it was in the 'zone'.

Then I got a new job and passed the master over to a 'master' who has recently produced this:

The most difficult thing has been the exhausts which will look like this but with the collectors on:

Since it is very nearly finished, we have asked a nice man to produce a few of these and we await developments

It would be great to hear from veteran HO urethane tire users for track maintenance/cleaning. What are the best methods to do this when you don't want to "strip off" the conditioned surface with cleansing chemicals? A lot of silicone users are concerned about having a clean track before a race. As we know, silicone runs best with a clean, dust-free surface. Any input is deeply appreciated. 1) Marques et Voitures Admises

Le Slot Rallye de la Côte Chalonnaise est ouvert aux voitures de circuit routier électrique, échelle 1/32ème, deux ou quatre roues motrices, sans aimant, avec lest, répondant aux caractéristiques suivantes :

* répliques de voitures ayant courues en Rallyes, toute époque confondue.

* marque Fly, SCX, Ninco, Spirit, Scalextric, Team Slot, Revell.

Une voiture ne correspondant pas à une catégorie courra en catégorie "Open" : entièrement libre.

2) Préparation Technique

a) La voiture doit être d’origine et doit obligatoirement contenir la Carrosserie, l’habitacle, pilote-copilote, les vitres, l’arceau. Une tolérance est observée en cas d’absence de rétro, d’aileron et d’éléments esthétiques extérieurs à la voiture.

b) Les options proposées par les constructeurs, ainsi que les modèles vendus équipés de ces options sont strictement interdits (ex. : paliers à roulements à billes ou modèle Pro Race chez NINCO, moteur « Pro Turbo » chez SCX).

c) Le moteur doit être issu de la marque du fabriquant.

d) Les Pneumatiques utilisés doivent être ceux du modèle d’origine, ou issus des marques SCX ou NINCO. Le diamètre d’origine doit être respecté.

d) L’usage de produit de nature à améliorer la motricité est interdit, hormis la brosse autocollante

3) Déroulement de la Course

Mise en parc Fermé des voitures.

Durant la course, les voitures seront toujours en régime de Parc Fermé, hormis les Épreuves Chronométrées et

les Assistances.

Une tolérance est observée pour redresser les tresses.

Le concurrent aura à parcourir les épreuves chronométrées, sans aide extérieure ni autres outils, suivant son Carnet de Pointage, avec la voiture inscrite. Le changement de voiture, de moteur, de châssis, d’axe, n’est pas autorisé. En cas de panne, l’organisation mettra à la disposition du concurrent, une voiture sur chaque épreuve.

Les Épreuves Chronométrées seront à parcourir seules, départ arrêté.

Le Vainqueur de la course est le concurrent qui aura mis le moins de temps pour parcourir

l’ensemble des Épreuves Chronométrées, pénalités comprises

4) Les Pénalités et les Sanctions

* Voiture non conforme pendant la course : Mise Hors Course

* Faux départ : Nouvelle procédure de départ.

* Intervention sur la voiture (hormis le redressage de tresses), hors période d’Assistance ou

d’Épreuves Chronométrées : 10 secondes de pénalité au Classement Général

* Utilisation d’une auto différente de celle inscrite lors d’une épreuve chronométrée (mulet) :

30 secondes de pénalité au Classement Général

* Retard à un pointage horaire, ou au départ des Étapes :

10 secondes de pénalité au Classement Général.

* Perte de Carnet de Pointage :

1 minute de pénalité au Classement Général

5) Véhicules Historiques

Carrera Vette front end adjustment

On the new Vette, I wanted to get the front end just right. Like most I wanted the front wheels/tires just touching.

First I sanded the front tires until they were smooth all the way across on the Razor.

But that was not enough so I did the front axle mod like shown in the Ferrari review.

This is the Ferrari, but I did the same with this Vette.
Once it was set, I oiled the axle to make sure any Super Glue would not be so easy to stick and then glued the bushings in place.

Lowering it just a little, it still clears the body.

Car runs much better on the lumber now. Took about 10 minutes, not a real difficult task.

Aussie Speedway - newbie build

After a year of armchair trackbuilding I'm finally starting on building a track - thanks to all the experienced folks on this board and the information they've posted I reckon I can tackle it.

Initially I was had delusions of steel with a CNC steel track but having seen the light (emanating from the wallet) I'm starting with an oval in mdf based on dirt speedways in Australia, particularly my local one, the Daylesford speedway

Materials I've collected:

MDF
Router - a small Makita (all the small aussie ones have two handles)
Double fluted carbide 1/16" bits
Stitching Wire
Vacuum Cleaner and masks
Backyard to do it in

To Get:
I think I will use square aluminium strips to get the curves.
Plexiglass for router baseplate.

Problems I've got :yo: :

Problem #1
Drawing out the above track onto the MDF. I've got a video projector so I think I will project a simplified line drawing of the track onto the mdf and draw it on. I'm stuck at the simplified line drawing part - this cat can't CAD :-(

My MDF is a tad under 2m x 1m (1920x960)and I'm going for 4 lanes with AFX spacing (1.5" with 1.75" border) . A rough mockup in Ultimate Racer shows that the dimensions of the Daylesford speedway should fit and is almost to scale (!)

If anyone CAD capable people could convert Daylesford speedway into a line drawing that would be superb. :banana:

The shaft of the router bits are too small for the router. Do I need an adaptor like one from here:

Hi all. This build has been on the Australian forum for a while, and I thought it high time to share over here, especially given much of the information used for the build came from English 1:1 Ford enthusiast forums.
The body is based on the SCX car, with the flares made from .5mm styrene and Tamiya epoxy putty. The rear wing is a Fly spare for a Capri. The decals came from Germany, with the exception of the gauges which are from a Tamiya 1/24 Mini, and the front 'Manimmal' decal which i prepared earlier. The car has been built for a scratch built chassis group 5 proxy we're holding in Australia this year, which should be fun. Anyway bla bla bla the pictures can tell the rest of the story.

...it's time for an exorcism.

I was giving this little gem a quick lube and upon attempting to put the body back on, I noticed the rear was not seated all the way. Upon further inspection I found that the screw post was not fully meeting the body post. Why?

The screw post was hitting the light board. You can see the gap in this photo:

To fix this, I simply took my hobby knife and cut a notch in the rear of the post so that it would clear the light board.

Stephen Morton put it all together and scored his first win in Retro. Racing a new chassis designed and built by Dom Lungo he was quick and except for one wall-shot, steady. Dom' new chassis stood up to tMorty's punishment so it was a ver successful debut. Nate had technical troubles in the first heat with his controller, lost 7 laps and finished strong in 2nd. No telling how close a finish it might have been without his troubles. Dom lost 10 laps(?) to a technical problem but his car was clearly the fastest again. Peter and Tom raced hard and were only 1/3 of a lap apart at the finish. Richard, Dick and Donald rounded out the field.

Dom's new chassis is a prototype for a kit and performed very well. Simple and durable it has no fancy tricks, just solid traditional design. I imagine at some point he will post photos.

Trouble with my new Ninco Renault

Hey guys...I'm back. Just got the NINCO 50580 RENAULT MEGANE TROPHY N4 PRORACE LIGHTNING. Not only are the looks stunning but it is by far the fastest car I own. I just chipped it to run on my Carrera digital track (with lights) and everything went well except the braid doesn't make very good contact with the rails. This guide is deep but without a spring. If I remember correctly from the last Ninco car I did, everyone said not to bend the braids. Any suggestion on how to make better contact with the rails? I really want to run this car!! If I get this car to work...I'm buying more :nod:

I dug up an FTDI RS-232 serial to USB adapter and plan on heading to Radio Shack tomorrow to make another adapter to the mini-din for the control unit. I'm looking at these instructions, which are great, except it shows 2 pin out diagrams with the Rx and Tx reversed.

In the 2 diagrams, one is male and one is female. Which one is right?

4 lanes vs. Digital

I'm thinking of upgrading my Ninco track this spring/summer to either 4 lanes or digital and was wondering what you guys prefer (or would prefer if you did it). I've never raced on 4 lanes or a digital track before so any advice would be appreciated.

The way I figure it, I could fit in a 60-70ft. 4-lane track or a 80-100ft. 2-lane digital with my upgrade. Usually there are three racers (sometimes 4). A one time upgrade, price-wise, would be the same for both layouts (my budget is around $400) although in the future it looks like digital would be more expensive with more chips and a pitlane.

A two lane track would have room for borders and scenery plus the layout would be more interesting and would allow for more technical sections along with a nice long straightaway. I don't think Ninco makes a wireless digital system but they are coming out with wireless analogue this year which is a positive for 4-lane. Having 3 or 4 guys tethered in the same area is a negative for digital.

Anyway, I was hoping to pick your brains with any experience you might have and how enjoyable you find either system.

By the way, this isn't Ninco specific necessarily.

Yesterday i was looking at the Buy and Sell on S.C.I. and saw a Pit Box ( Slot Car Carring Case )for sale along with some cars . I realized i had a new Pit Box Part #88110 say's it comes complete with a Pit Board, holds a couple of cars and your controller as well as parts .Still in it's Factory plastic wrap. Weight: Any amount of weigh anywhere inside the car. Not to be seen from the outside.

Tires: Luf's Urethane tires. Tires can be glued to the wheel and trued. Since the Scalextric tires have tread and the Pioneer tires are slicks tread need not be present. Spur gear must not contact the track surface.

Wires: Pioneer cars can have the digital chip receptacle bypassed.

A Twisted Mind: Dead Man's Curve 124

New house. New track. :banana: 124' long 4 lane Carrera 1/24.

Gonna call it "Dead Man's Curve 124" :USA::USA::USA::USA:

Two months of work so far, and a long way to go till I'm finished....
but it's up and running and so far it rocks. Only have 6 power supply
tracks wired in each lane per lap and everything (except for the
heavy downforce hot rod 1/32's) runs great. I'm guessing I need about
15 power taps - which is about one every 8 feet. The 1/24th scale
cars run better than I thought, tho we've only run two at a time at 20V.
The entire track will be trimmed out with Carrera aprons inside and out. Got some
definite tweaking to do to the corners to get the transitions just right. Can't
believe what a difference a little change in height or angle makes. Hope to get
a lot of the track dialed-in in the next few months.

A lot of this video was shot on my I-phone (while I was driving the cars....),
and it's a little shaky at times, but you should be able to get a feel for the layout.
The 1/24th scale yellow roadster was being run at 20V and the lighted blue Scalextric
Viper at 18.

Slot car videos seem to easier to watch at low or lower voltages, but I figured that's
what we race them at anyway. Some of this footage is from the early stages of the 207 footer,
and I play all of the instruments on the soundtrack. Hope u find it interesting.

I am a little confused the Can-Am rules state as follows

"All bodies must be representative of pre-1970 Can-Am/USARC cars"

I may be incorrect but the most recently-approved Ti22 (OS-473 Ti22R) is really a representation of the Ti22 Mk11 which raced at both Laguna Seca and Riverside which were the last two races of the 1970 Cam-Am season. All photo history points to the Ti22 looking as represented by both the Kirby, Parma, OS 415, and OS short.

Not trying to stir the pot, just confused. Thanks in advance for any help as to this question.

Frank was the co-owner of Rte. 93, along with his wife Debbie, and a dedicated racer.

I cherish and remember our last talk in Sept. His parting remark to me as he was leaving the MMW P-O race was... "Hey man, we are all terminal"...

Apparently the actual model looks even better than the pictures. This model is completely tampo printed and there are no decals on the car. Each one comes with the card in the box, positioned in the case like the way FLY does.

As a subtheme to our begining with the first letter of the month deal, I'd like to suggest a "Vintage Flexi Division" .

Rodney bought along this beauty from "back in the day" complete with a "hot wing" installed ! A Parma Flexi 1 from the 1980's. I'm to understand that this car once ran a GP 12 motor in competition, I love the paint !

Tips on Urethane Tires for HO

I’ve read several articles on this subject and would like to share the knowledge. If you are considering urethane rear tires for the first time, please listen carefully. If you’re a familiar with urethane, then this will be a little “refresher”.

“Thanes” require being "driven-in" allowing material to build up on the track surface for optimum grip, just like real 1:1 rubber tires on asphalt. They also advise not cleaning ("squeaky clean") the track surface as you would to accommodate silicone. Obviously a dirty track spells “death” for silicone tires. Based on these factors, your club and members may not readily embrace this kind of change.

Unless you are ready to make a complete switch from silicone, then perhaps urethane is not for you. I don’t say this to discourage using urethane, but to educate customers before they buy. It just makes good sense.

The address for the building is 3004 South Westwood Boulevard. It is the building between Semo Carpet and the new Gym (not sure on its name). My red truck will be sitting in front of the door.

This is a warehouse and it is supposed to be cold so bring warm clothes. I'll have a heater setup but I can't guarantee how warm it will be.

New AMT slot car kit review

Received on my front step last night at 6:30 and I worked on it until 10:30 assembling the chassis and taking pictures. The following is my thoughts and a basic assembly review. That is part one. Part two will be later and involves mounting the body, paint, and detailing. Part three will be a road test and part four... the "hop-up"!

Initial look at the box art shows this to be beautiful! Vintage colors, no expense spared on printing and packaging.

Parts under a blister just like the old days... and still hard to remove from same...

Two types of window glass are provided: injection molded clear (including headlights) and vacuum-formed and tinted full glass. This is handy as there is no provided interior details whatsoever.

Decal sheet seems complete and is extremely well printed. Appear thin enough to disappear under clear coat... that is if I plan to go shiny. Frankly, I plan to go period dirt track.... but that is later.

In this day and age, why AMT engineers choose to re-invent the wheel I do not understand. But... it does go together with little fuss and seems like it'll work fairly well.

The guide is after all, patterned after Parma almost to the dimension. Nice that the threads go all the way down though eliminating the need for a threading tool. Parma item will not fit the chassis without modifications to the chassis as we will see later.

Wheels are plastic/nylon material. No set screws. They press fit onto the axle like some of the 1/32 kits do.
Inside dimension just about perfect for a set of inserts. Tire are soft rubber and will provide fairly good traction with this motor. Front and rears are the same material and all four wheels same size.

Motor has little markings and the magnets are no where near as strong as those in a TSR motor. However, spinning up on the tester shows it to have plenty of torque. This explains why it comes with a 3.75 to 1 ratio. The aluminum adapter is there to convert the motor screws from vertical to horizontal. This is interesting to me. Why not simply make the chassis with horizontal holes in the first place?

But... that means it fits this motor with no mods...

This motor, BTW, is in my hop-up kit for part four!

Hello Everyone,
Have been playing around with this off & on now for awhile. just when I thought it was going to work it would NOT!

Finally! after several months of playing around I'm able to make it happen!

A few things have changed since anyone has posted information on webcasting so thought I would share the results that has worked for me.
The Adobe (FME) Flash Media Encoder V3.0 that Greg Wells has had good success with in using is no longer called that but has been upgraded to the new Adobe Flash media LIVE encoder V3.2 (FMLE) still works EXACTLY the same way just a new version.
also, using or trying to use Windows Explorer 8 on a Windows XP O/S did not work,but downloaded the Mozilla Firefox on same O/S and that was the key!
It works! at least right now!
Don't forget you must sign up for FREE at the Adobe site to obtain this software,and don't forget the XML file needed also. this XML file is generated from U-stream,and must be placed into the FMLE.

my next stumbling step is? how do i tell or show people the channel?

carrera digital brakes

I've noticed a major difference in the braking on my carrera track between anolog cars and digital cars running in anolog mode. The track is 52' long in each lane, It doesn't seem to make any difference which lane your in. I use the carrera red controllers (solid state) . The carrera Mclaren m20 digital will stop in half the distance the Mclaren anolog car will. When I run Revell cars they also are slow to stop . and sometimes the Revel cars act like the have no brakes at all.
I have checked track voltage and it's 14.2 volts all over, so I'm really stumped by the brakes on and then in the next lap no brakes. thanks in advance

Melbourne Model Raceway Race report - 8 Feb 2012

After a two month hiatus, vintage 1/24 racing was back on at the Melbourne Model Raceway last night. During the mid to late noughties a number of the core that had formed the backbone of the racing coterie had left the sport or moved away. Numbers were pretty low at a lot of races. That started to change a about two years ago with several of the 1/32 racers stating to come along for a dabble with these funny, big old cars with real rubber instead of urethane.

Last night we had ten starters, which with a five-lane track is about as many as you want. What's really pleasing is that we were running a different car on each lane, so all these recent converts to vintage 1/24 scale needed five cars. That's not as onerous an ask as it seems as there's always a car available to borrow if you don't have on for a class, although often it takes a while to convince a recent starter to borrow a car as they're overly concerned about damaging someone's 45 year old classic.

We've run a variation on this "five classes cars in one race" theme three times now so most of the new guys had acquired a full complement or very close to it. That meant that with ten drivers and five cars each we had nearly 50 cars in the field. Where drivers have more than one car for a class we usually get them to put all of them on the track for the photos of the field but last night we restricted it to just the main car for each bracket as we had so many.

Here're some pics of the field with the cars arranged on the lane they will run on. Well mostly. You'll work it out I'm sure. Each bracket mixed the following classes:

Production tourers and stockers on red,
Open frame motor cars on white
Ferraris on green
Vac body sports and FX/FJ Holdens on yellow
Open wheelers on blue.

Here’s some pics of the field, including some short under the skirts. With such a large field I’ve split it into several pictures.

One person who did need a car for one class was "Chiro" Kev Turley who had run out of hypoid gears for his MPC corvette. Last time we'd run open frame motor cars Kevin had borrowed an MPC-powered Ferrari from me which had also chewed out its hypoid crown gear by the end of his bracket. I'd run out of replacements as well and I was getting a bit tired of replacing them. All the gears I'd found had been warped so I could never get great mesh. Those Dynocharger motors have so much torque that it seemed that anything but a perfect mesh was doomed to fail. The night before the race I decided there was only one solution so I filed out the rear bearing holes in the chassis so that the axle was now at the same level as the armature shaft, epoxied in the bearings and installed a non-hypoid Cox nylon gear. I tried a couple of laps before the race started and it seemed fine. When Kev arrived minus a car for the class I lent him the MPC as I had a couple of Atlas cars anyway.

Our racers included Ian Perry, a great driver who builds very fast cars. Ian doesn't get to all our races, but when he does he always finishes on or near the top of the podium. I'd managed a win when we'd run these same classes back in December, although I'd struggled with slow cars in the Ferrari and open frame motor classes. I'd repaired my quick Cox Dino so I was feeling quietly confident until I realized Ian was racing. The first bracket started and my concerns proved to be well founded as Ian was quickly up at the front of the field. He wasn’t alone though. I hadn’t reckoned on Chiro Kev who took up the lead with his 26D-powered, Cox Iso-framed, vac-bodied sports car. In the end Kev won the bracket posting 82 laps and a best time of 4.06. Ian Perry was second with 80 laps. Ian was up again in the second bracket, this time driving his FJ. Ian won this time with 84 laps and a best time of 4.000 and no break-outs! Jurgen Sonnenmoser came in second on red with 83 laps. That was a great effort driving an open wheeler. It's not that open wheelers are that much slower, it's just that any bump with another car usually results in an off for one or both. Jurgen managed a best lap of 4.06.

I was up next for my first bracket of the night and the chance to run my fastest car, my Cox Iso-framed FJ Holden powered by GE. I'd extended the chassis to fit the 4.5" wheelbase of the Sunset FJ shell. I had an uneventful run on yellow and posted 85 laps, but I knew I still had a couple of slow brackets coming. I followed that with my other hot car, a Nichimo BRM body with a Dynamic chassis and 26D motor. Ian responded in the following bracket with nearly 86 laps with his stocker in red. Once again he'd posted a best lap of 4.000 yet hadn't broken out!

Track owner Ged Croughan had his turn on yellow running a Matich SR3 with a 26D Dynamic sidewinder underneath. This is the fastest car I've seen on the MMR track, apart from a late 1960s Champion lead sled I drove with a Mura B-can. We normally give the fast cars’ drivers a quick read out of their lap times so they know if they're close to breaking out. Ged did a 4.1 from a standing start and then broke out on the very next lap before we'd had a chance to see what his times were. After that he slowed down. He still managed 84 laps despite dropping one on lap 2.

Bracket 7 was the closest of the night with the first three places all on the same lap. I won by a whisker with my AMT-bodied Cox Dan Gurney Galaxie, posting a relatively modest 82 laps. Other drivers were getting 84 and 85 laps when winning their brackets, so even though I won, I didn’t consider it a good result. I'd edged out Ged by a whisker with Charlie Charlton coming in third with a blisteringly-quick Cox Dino Iso. That Dino was the fastest hard bodied car there on the night, but after a couple of early crashes Charlie was chasing hard to get back to the front when his crown gear exploded. Charlie ran back to his box for another car, but in the confusion of t race he actually unplugged his controller and took it with him, which meant he had to plug it in again when he came back with his replacement car. Despite all that he was only a lap behind at the end of the bracket. He would have won the bracket easily if not for the gear failure.

That was all my strong brackets over. I still had to run the Ferrari and open frame motor brackets. Meanwhile, the MPC-powered Ferrari I'd lent Kevin had run really well in his open frame motor bracket and the gear was sounding as good at the end as it had at the start, a first for an MPC for Kevin.
I finished third in the 8th bracket with my Ferrari. I thought that was game over for me, but then in the ninth bracket I had my first match up with Ian Perry. I had to run an open frame motor car, where in previous races I’d given away many laps, while Ian was running a Ferrari with no restriction on motor. I knew from past experience that while they looked great and were fun to drive, my Atlas cars were too underpowered to give me much chance.

The night before the race I'd built a new car for the class with a Pittman motor in a Dynamic chassis under an AMT Hussein body, however I hadn't had a chance to true the tyres and it was bouncing down the straight. It had potential, but needed more work. Kevin convinced me to run my MPC-powered Ferrari. It had gotten quicker as the night went on and by the time I finished the bracket it was running nearly as quick as the can motor cars. It managed a couple of laps in the 4.1s and I finished with 83 laps, just two less than my best brackets of the night. My best lap was 4.109. Ian Perry and I had finished all our brackets and there was just one to go. Kev ran the MPC Ferrari in the last bracket and it not only survived three brackets on the same gear but rewarded him with a bracket win and 82 laps.

Racing was over and I had no idea of the results. I hadn’t realised that Ian Perry had finished well down when running his vac-bodied sports car in the third bracket, so I actually had a few laps in reserve. In the end I'd managed to clinch the night thanks to consistent results in four out of five rounds. Kev was the dark horse. His victory with the MPC in the last bracket was just enough to jump him into second place ahead of Ian Perry.

We had one new driver on the night who naturally finished at the end of the field. That aside, there was only a 10% margin between second and ninth, with just 2.5% separating second from sixth! Our races could hardly provide a greater variety of classes, yet there was close racing in every bracket, and each of the five classes produced at least one bracket winner.

The highlight of the night was the reliability of all the cars. With new blood entering the races and the introduction of the new classes for Ferraris and open frame motor cars over the last few months we’d seen a lot of new cars built. Within just a couple of race meetings they'd been refined enormously so that we had only one car out of a field of 50 fail to finish its bracket.

The field comprised Stephen Corneille, Kev Turley, Ian Perry, Ged Croughan, Jurgen Sonnenmoser, Chris Pic, Charlie Charlton, Ian Russell, Gary Scott and Andrew-the-new-guy-whose-surname-I-never-got,

Next month it's hard body sports cars. In the past we've run races for just Cox sports cars or just Tamiyas, but with so many new racers in our ranks we're running more open classes as a lot of people won't have cars for some of our more prescriptive classes. After that we'll be back in April and slow things down quite a bit with a race for Pan-Americanas. These are '49-52 saloons powered by Strombecker Devastators. There's a theory going around that the motor got its name from the way kids felt when they put their new car with one of these motors on the track for the first time and saw how slow it was!

IR LEDs and Resistors?

Hi guys,

I'm attempting to wire a scratch-built light bridge. I know very little about electricity but it seems straight forward enough. I'm just not sure about wiring up the resistor. Maybe some of you guys who know electronics can help.

I'll be using a 9v power source to fire the thing up.

It will house 4 IR LEDs with the following specs:

Reverse voltage: 5v
Continuous forward current: 150mA
Forward voltage: 1.3v typ, 1.7v max
Radiant power output: 13 - 15mW
Wavelength at peak emission: 950nm

Using an online LED wizard I found that I need to wire in a 22 Ohm resistor.

Seems to me the LEDs are best wired in parallel so that there is no drop off in voltage as there would be if they were wired in series.

I want to confirm the Ohm rating that I got from the wizard but I also seem to remember from HS electricity that resistors have a polarity and so they need to be wired in a certain direction. I'm red-green color blind and so I did not learn about electricity in HS and what I did learn is vague.

Can someone confirm the Ohm rating and give me advise about how to wire in the resistor?
